The idea for cultural and culinary walking tours was birthed from the practice of teaching culinary cultural trends. This led to a major change in the life of Robert and ‘A Wok Around’ came into being. The company offers two tours; one around Chinatown and one around Granville Island. The tours highlight the cultural and culinary elements of the two historic and colourful neighbourhoods.

Both the tours are unique on their own, not just because they are conducted at different locations but also because they encompass unique elements.

Vancouver’s Chinatown is regarded as a must-see location for visitors as it is defined as a bustling historic treasure. The tour starts from the classical Chinese garden of Dr Sun Yet Sen which is rated as the number one urban garden by National Geographic. This is followed more activities spread across the neighbourhood, such as:

  • Exploring the diverse speciality shops and merchants.
  • Visiting shops that offer a wide variety of mouthwatering delicacies such as live seafood, barbequed meat, crispy skin duck, teas and delectable pastries.
  • Seeing how different dishes are cooked in shops specialising in every bit of kitchenware imaginable.

One of the most important parts that Robert emphasises is taking part in tasting the cuisine. Each of his in-person tours ends with a delicious dim sum lunch, so guests are advised to bring in their appetite. On a tour with Robert, virtual or in-person, you will get to see a lot of colourful and fresh ingredients, see the rich variety of medicines used in traditional Chinese medicine, and experience the sights and sounds of this culturally rich neighbourhood. Tours also take guests to historic landmarks as well as a featured visit to a symbolic merchant.

A tour around beautiful Granville Island is not complete without visiting the Granville Island public market, which is nothing short of a treasure for locals and travellers alike. The location has an energy of its own and an aura that will lift your spirit. Full of colourful and various foods, you will wind through the market and get to taste several unique and extremely delectable foods such as:

  • Chai tea lattes
  • Maple-cure salmon
  • Canadian cheeses
